The image of the shelf is turned sideways so the book titles on the spines can be read, and users can scroll the shelf. “This is in some ways a very old-fashioned way of seeing a work in context. The idea is that works are always in a web of other works, they have meaning and significance because of the connections they have to other works,” Weinberger said.

The Harvard Library Innovation Lab is worth exploring.

A total of 25 participants, representing 11 Libraries/Information centres from different parts of the Maldives, completed the program. The training received positive feedback overall, with a number of participants requesting additional days and more time for practical work.

The training was conducted by Fathimath Nashfa with support from Nitesh Rijal and Ahmed Rasheed.

NCIT Facilitates National Library & Maldives Library Association to conduct a Training on “Koha Intergrated Library System Software”and “Greenstone Library Software” Last updated on : September 11, 2011

National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) facilitates the National library and Maldives Library Association to conduct training on “Koha ILS Software” and “Greenstone Digital Library (GSDL) Software” from 11th September 2011 to 15th September 2011. This Training is jointly organized by the Maldives Library Association (MLA) & National Library of Maldives (NLM) facilitated by Maldives National University Library, Nepzilla Solutions Nepal, the Maldivian Greenstone Network and Ministry of Education.

The objective of the training is to train technical staff from selected libraries in materializing automation of library services. The training will cover “Koha Intergrated Library System Software” and “Green Stone Library Software”.

This 5 day training is attended by technical staff from selected 11 libraries across nation. The training is conducted by overseas experts in partnership with the Maldives Library Association with administrative support from the Institute of library and Information Services, NLM as part of MLA Koha Pilot Project 2011.

The training is being delivered as part of the MLA Koha Pilot Project 2011, to provide the staff of the participating libraries the necessary skills to set up and maintain a database of their library collection in Koha ILS. The training is conducted from 9:00am to 4:00pm everyday during 11 to 13 September 2011. In addition to the target libraries from the Project, other interested institutions have been given the chance to participate in this training as much as possible. We are overwhelmed by the interest shown by the number of schools wishing to participate in this training.

The current training program accommodates 25 participants, and represents 17 libraries from 11 different islands of the Maldives including the capital Male’. It is also noteworthy that computer technicians also joined us at this training. For this project to succeed we need participation and cooperation of the IT people.

Editorial

Assalaam A’laikum.

Welcome to the second issue of MLA newsletter meet.learn.acquire for 2011.

The months between the last issue and this has been considerably quieter in terms of the ‘bang’ effect. However, very important initiatives have been taking place that will have a lasting impact on the Maldives LIS sector.

The automation and digitization initiatives taken by the MGN in 2010 has been embraced by the MLA, with plans in place to automate 10 libraries throughout the country  by end of 2011. This issue’s library profile page has been replaced with brief information about  the libraries selected for the project.

On page 4, read profile on our very hardworking LIS personnel Fathimath Nashath, followed by a bibliography of LIS and related publications on the Maldives. This highlights the opportunities and the information gaps in the Maldives’ LIS sector. We have also included highlights from international conferences and workshops attended by MLA members, including CDNL conference held in Soul, EIFL General Assembly held in Belarus, LIS leadership program held in various states of US, and International Workshop on Health Information Literacy held in Dhaka.

The library day of the year was marked on 12 July at various libraries throughout the country.  Further, Read a new topic on OH&S series as well as from classification series. Also read an informative article on LIS’s interdisciplinary approach.

I take this opportunity to thank all our readers, members, & contributors for the continued support in article contribution and for the encouraging feedback for the newsletter.

MLA Koha Pilot Project 2011

Call for expression of interest in providing technical support and training on Koha ILS

Terms of Reference for the interested party are as follows

-          Data conversion from .csv to Koha – for a maximum of 10 libraries

-          Setup of individual Koha databases for 10 libraries

-          Provision of combined search facility for the 10 libraries

-          Online support to the MLA Koha project coordination team.

-          Physical on-site hands-on training and support to the MLA Koha project coordination team for a duration not less than 2 weeks.

-          Physical on-site Koha training to the library staff of the 10 libraries. The training will be conducted in Male’, Maldives to a maximum of 20 participants.

-         Greenstone Digital Library software expertise will be an added advantage.

What the MLA will provide:

-          Economy return air ticket from the country of origin of the selected party (only for one person).

-          Accommodation, food, & local hospitality during the on-site visit.

-          Infrastructure required for the setup of the databases as stated above

-          Training facility

-          Local resource person with a fair knowledge of Koha ILS for the necessary coordination and support during the on-site visit.

The on-site visit would need to be adjusted between the duration from 1 to 25 September 2011.

The tentative dates for the training are 11-13 September 2011.

We would like to welcome the Republic of the Maldives as our newest EIFL Partner Country!

Fathmath Shiham, Chief Librarian at the National Library of the Maldives, in consultation with the library community, has initiated our new partnership and will be the EIFL country coordinator

Currently there is no formal library consortium but Fathmath and the EIFL team have started to take the first steps on the Consortium Management roadmap. There are academic, government, school, special, private, and public libraries that have expressed interest in being included in the consortium.

Geography is among the challenges that they face because the population is dispersed over 200 islands and there is a lack of natural resource.  The Maldives is classified by the IMF as an emerging and developing economy. Their GDP per capita is US$ 4,478 (2010 estimate), the service section accounts for over 70% of the GDP.
