Our people, our love for books
The Maldives Library Association organized a photo competition with the theme of Our people, our love for books, to create awareness about the roles of books in our society and our intellectual development.
World Library & Copyright Awareness Day, marked on 23 April each year, is an initiative by UNESCO that was endorsed in 1995. The day has continued to be marked in various parts of the world with varied events around the role of book.
This is the first time World Book Day is marked in the Maldives. The Library Association plans to continue the celebration of book in future years in conjunction with the UNESCO’s World Book Day.
The activities carried out in 2013 was aimed at creating a ripple effect in the community in relations to books and libraries. The Library Association targeted to collect photos from the public and libraries throughout the country to showcase OUR PEOPLE, OUR LOVE FOR BOOKS.
The segment for the public was opened up as a photo competition offering an iPad4 as a gift for the photo that received most SMS votes. Ten photos among all the photos that were received, were selected by an independent panel outside of MLA members.
This exercise has proved a worthwhile project to rekindle a joy of reading and the Association hopes to bring back a similar context next year with more time given for photo submission.
This year’s 10 best photos chosen by the independent panel are as follows.
The photos are uploaded to our Facebook page [World Book Day 2013, Photo Competition]. The page will continue to exist and anyone interested can directly upload photos, or else can send the photos to our e-mail address firstname.lastname@example.org and we will upload them for you from time to time.
Here are some additional photos. We are very thankful for the contributions.
The top 10 photos were broadcasted on TVM on their “Magey Raajje” program opening up for sms votes. We are very glad to know that we managed to get over 4000 SMS votes this year. This was appreciated given the short time-frame in which the competition was developed and advertised.
