The university of the public library

Local Goverment Authority of the Maldives should be looking in to the establishment of public libraries throughout the country. Local Council are mandated with library provision for the communities.

I am a librarian at a small public library in rural Florida. While there is a lot to love about my community, many of my patrons face the ills of rural poverty: outdated infrastructure, inadequate schools, a lack of access to computers and high-speed Internet, and insufficient transportation. Under these circumstances, the public library isn’t just a “nice thing to have”–it’s a lifeline to community and social services, as well as the many benefits of access to technology.

While the library’s core mission is still to provide access to books and a place for free expression, providing access to high-speed Internet has become increasingly important. Far from reducing the need for libraries, the Internet has made libraries more valuable in communities like mine. People now use public computers and Internet to access job training, social services, and even healthcare, often with the assistance of library staff.

MLA Annual general meeting and Council election for 2014-2015

The Maldives Library Association annual general meeting was held on 25 January 2014 at the National Art Gallery Hall at the National Library Building, from 5:00pm to 6:00 pm where a new MLA council was elected.

The annual report for 2013 was presented at the meeting, and the activity calendar for the current year was shared and planned to be approved at the first council meeting.

Changes regarding membership was also proposed and approved at the meeting.

The new MLA Council was elected as stipulated in the MLA Constitution, by popular vote by the members present at the meeting.

The new composition of the MLA Council are as follows (for a two year term commencing 25 January 2014):

  • President:
    Ms Mahasin Ahmed Didi (National Library of Maldives)
  • Adviser:
    Ms Aminath Riyaz (Post Grad research student at Curtin University)
  • Vice President:
    Ms Fathimath Nashath (Villa College)
  • Editor:
    Ms Fathimath Shiham (National Library of Maldives)
  • Secretary:
    Ms Asiyath Subath (National Library of Maldives)
  • Assistant Secretary:
    Ms Aishath Shabana (The Maldives National University Library)
  • Training Officer
    Ms Samiya Mohamed (Auditor General’s Office)
  • Treasurer:
    Ms Shafeea Shakir
     (National Library of Maldives)
  • Public Relations Officer:
    Ms Shadiya Adnan (Student at Faculty of Arts)
  • General Council member (other member1):
    Ms Rishfa Ibrahim  (The Maldives National University Library)
  • General Council member (other member2):
    Ms Salwa Kareem (Kalaafaanu School)


For new members, a warm welcome to the Maldives Library Association and looking forward to two robust and active years of library advocacy in the Maldives. As pointed out by the outgoing president Aminath Riyaz “The Association has a great responsibility for increasing awareness of the importance of the library as a vital community institution and promoting the “librarian” as a worthy profession”.

Five days Workshop on DSpace : 50% MLA funded opportunity

SDC in collaboration with Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Library and Online Information Centre, Jamshoro, Pakistan will be organizing Five days Workshop on DSpace from 30th December 2013 to 3rd January 2014 at Jamshoro Pakistan. The workshop is meant for library and IT professionals.

The MLA Council has agreed to sponsor 50% of the airfare for the successful applicant.

Time is already running late. Therefore interested applicants please send in a request via e-mail to stating your interest to be considered for nomination. The e-mail should reach us before 14:00 hours on Tuesday, 17 December 2013.

To be eligible to be considered as an applicant you are required to be working in a library of the Maldives or in a Library and Information related field.

The selection will be done on 18 December and the applicants will be informed of the outcome the same day.
